About
Before there was an entity called Fynbos Wood and Laser, the owner started off making children's toys in the mid to late 1980s. As skills and a customer base expanded, other work was taken up on request and furniture pieces resulted ranging from wine racks to dining- and bedroom suites. The focus was never on trying to beat the prices of large furniture stores that mass produce items, but on giving the customer a bespoke item made from high quality timber and finished with care and attention to detail, that would last for decades.
The woodworking business was always performed on a part-time basis, and Fynbos Wood and Laser originated only after acquisition of a Diode Laser and relocation to St Helena Bay in the Western Cape. Today woodwork and laser engraving are performed on a full-time basis.
Craftsmanship as related to Fynbos Wood and Laser refers to skills developed over decades of woodworking, experience and research into construction techniques and finishes and an understanding of timber behaviour and properties. No paint, no varnish and no nails! Products are finished with non-toxic poly wax sealants for a smooth and velvety finish that penetrates the wood and provides protection against water, alcohol, heat and stains.
